WELCOME TO
KAJAKKBOX
Home Bed Brygge
At Hjemseng Brygge you can enjoy life by the sea, and you start your kayak trip on sheltered water, but with Fjærholmen and perhaps Bolærne or other places in Færder National Park as obvious destinations.
The launch takes place in a canal, so the start of the trip is quite calm, but so close to Tønsberg there can be a lot of traffic. Pay attention when passing the marina, try to take the route along the shore – and remember kayaks can be difficult to see from a boat.
Home Bed Brygge, Nøtterøy
Hjemseng is a brand new housing project, where the area is being developed to provide the most enjoyment possible around the archipelago, and several steps are being taken to ensure that both residents and guests enjoy themselves.
There is a kayak box along the road before you reach the parking lot, right next to the benches there is a floating dock, and if you find it difficult to get out from there, it is possible to carry it to a boat slip at the other end of the parking lot.
The trip starts on a canal lined with reeds, and it is possible to paddle along the shore towards Tønsberg if there is a lot of boat traffic.
The kayaks are stored on two benches near the parking lot before you reach the apartments, café and marina with sauna. Each kayak is described when booking, so be sure to choose one that suits your wishes for size and features.
A paddle vest and paddle are included with each kayak, while paddlers bring their own clothes, drinks and snacks.
There is some parking on site, but it is recommended to use public transportation or a bicycle on nice days.
Hjemseng pier is sheltered, but is also popular with boaters, especially in the southern direction. Since several places are quite shallow, there can be some waves when there is a lot of boat traffic. There is also a lot of bird life there - and we encourage you to keep your distance.
Due to the condition of the Oslofjord, there is no fishing in Færder National Park.
Launch from a pier right below the benches. If this is experienced as high, there is a boat ramp at the other end of the parking lot that can be used, but be considerate of boats.
There are opportunities here in all kinds of weather. A favorite is around Føynland, but within a few hours of paddling you have access to lively Tønsberg, several cabin paradises on islands along Nøtterøy or long-distance paddling out towards Bolærne. Just remember to check the weather forecast.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
You must have a minimum "Wet card" from the Norwegian Paddling Association or equivalent experience to rent a kayak with Kajakkbox. This means being familiar with the equipment, knowing basic techniques and knowing what to do in the event of an overturn. The hirer is also expected to make their own assessments with regard to the weather.
We have included a paddle stretcher and a paddle vest with each kayak. This is adapted to the size of the kayak, but the experienced and discerning paddler may want to bring their own equipment anyway. There is no spray deck at the kayaks and renters must wear clothes and shoes suitable for paddling, and you should expect to get wet on your arms, legs and where you sit.
We have quite a few different kayaks, and strive to provide good information about which ones are suitable for your use and your height and weight. This is stated for each kayak, but if you are extra curious, there is a lot of information to be found on the dealers' websites.
You will receive a code for the kayak you have rented and unlock the correct box. Vest, paddle and sponge are removed and the kayak is pulled out and placed on the grass for inspection. Check that the kayak is initially empty and that the hatches, lines and seal keel work well. Adjust the foot pedals so that the kayak suits you and remember to put on a paddling vest. Pack a dry change of clothes if you are going on a longer trip. Close the kayak box with the padlock while on a trip.
If for some reason you find that the kayak is not in a condition where you want to paddle it, or there is a fault and you can not open the lock or the like, try to get in touch with us immediately preferably by phone or send an email. We will then do our best to help you and otherwise book another kayak and we will compensate you accordingly.
There is no separate place for storing equipment, but there is a shelf in each box where it is possible to leave clothes and shoes at your own risk. It is recommended that you bring a waterproof bag for your wallet, phone etc.
The most important thing is to check both the weather forecast and the actual weather at the paddling location. It is usually recommended to start the trip against the wind direction, but in special weather conditions the wind can change and at some paddling locations there are special conditions in terms of, for example, current. It will then be stated on the description.
It's a good idea to have a goal for the trip, but also keep an eye on the clock and think about returning well before the deadline. If there are several of you paddling together, take into account the least experienced.
There are many personal preferences here, but most things that are comfortable to move around in can work for paddling. In the event of an overturn, it is an advantage if the clothes fit well on the body and do not absorb too much water so they become heavy. You should choose clothes according to the water temperature and on longer trips bring a change of clothes and a windproof jacket for breaks. Running tights and a wool blouse work well. On the feet, neoprene or bathing shoes are recommended, or possibly shoes or sandals without laces that can get caught inside the kayak.
Remember a dry change for afterwards.
If the weather on the day you've booked is so bad that it's not safe to paddle, you may be offered the opportunity to change to an alternative location, time or have your booking refunded. Please contact us as early as possible so we can help. Weather conditions that entitle you to a refund are thunder, strong wind or fog.
Wear and tear on equipment is a natural consequence of heavy use and will not be charged to the tenant. Costs for repairing damage that is the result of careless use may be charged to the lessee. In the event of loss of a kayak or other equipment, you are responsible for all costs to replace what has been lost.
If you are many or want the kayaks for several days, please contact us and we will try to help you. Kajakkbox is especially designed to make paddling accessible to many for smaller adventures or everyday trips, but we are also happy to help with other needs.
Våttkort is the Norwegian certificate for kayaking, and it is divided so that you start either with an intro course (4 hours) or a basic course (16 hours) to gain basic skills and become safe in the event of an overturn. The basic course must be taken before it is possible to continue with technique courses, etc... See more about wet cards and content at https://padling.no/vaattkort/
Many providers, kayak clubs and DNT offer kayaking courses. Feel free to get in touch and maybe we can help you find someone near you.
